Social Competence and Marital Adjustment

Erik E. Filsinger

Center for Family Studies, Arizona State University, Tempe 85281

The argument is made that social competence would be related to marital adjustment. Data were collected on a community sample of 44 men and 39 women. Marital adjustment was related to the individual's self-perceived social competence. In general, a manipulative inter personal orientation was negatively related to marital adjustment for females, but need for dominance was positively related to dyadic cohesion for males. The results are discussed in terms of their conceptual significance and their implications for home economists. (Home Economics Research Journal, December 1980, Vol. 9, No. 2)
