Quality of Life from the Perspective of the Elderly

Mohamed Abdel-Ghany

School of Home Economics, The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Greensboro 27412

In an attempt to discern the aspects of quality of life that are particularly relevant to the aged, 961 adults (age 65 or older) were interviewed and asked to assess their housing, health, social relations and activities, life satisfaction, independence, and economic conditions. The results of factor analysis procedure revealed that social and physical isolation and eco nomic achievement were the most salient factors of quality of life satisfaction. Factor Index—a composite index of quality of life indicators—showed that quality of life as perceived by the elderly varies according to geographical areas. The implication of these findings for future studies is suggested. (Home Economics Research Journal, September, 1977, Vol. 6, No. 1)
