The Design of Protective Equipment for Ice Hockey

The major objectives of the research were to provide the apparel designer with informa tion about user needs with regard to protective equipment and to stimulate the devel opment of new apparel forms for protective materials. Hockey players were observed under game conditions to gather impact and body movement data. Impact data were related to medical literature and recommendations were made for the shape and structure of protec tive equipment for various body areas. Body movement data were used to determine the amount of over-the-joint movement needed in the protective covering of players during performance. Two additional studies were undertaken to provide the apparel designer with a basis for exploring design solutions: a suspension study that explored a variety of means for suspending rigid forms over parts of the body, and a jointing study that examined means of connecting rigid materials in ways which related to body joint movements. The results of the research were sketched proposals for protective ice hockey equipment and fin ished prototypes.
