Effects of Selected Laundering and Drycleaning Pretreatments on the Colors of Naturally Colored CottonTarleton State University
Texas Tech University Naturally colored cottons have recently appeared in mass produced products. However, consumers need information about possible differences between naturally colored cotton and white or dyed cotton. This study evaluates changes in color in Coyote (brown), green, and white cottons due to 12 selected laundry and drycleaning stain pretreatments. Samples of each cotton were pretreated and then laundered or drycleaned 15 times. Instrument color readings were done on a MacBeth Series 1500 Color Measurement System. A panel of four judges evaluated the samples, using the Color Change by Gray Scale instrument. Pearson's r correlation analysis, ANOVAs, and Scheffi post hoc tests were done using SPSSx. Significant differences werefound in allfabric colors due to both laundry and drycleaning pretreatments. Green cotton was more affected than Coyote or white, and naturally colored cottons changed in ways that white cotton did not change. Ammonia and chlorine bleach resulted in the greatest changes in the colored cottons.
