Dept. of Family and Child Studies, University of Kentucky, Lexington, KY 40506 Literature bearing on the relationship of women's employment status to couples' marital adjustment is reviewed. Three competing hypothesesstatus competi tion, status enhancement, and no effectsare discussed in terms of farm couples' current context. Findings from this study of 527 farm couples suggest that at this time, women's off-farm employment might be in competition with traditional farm values, and thus might hinder high-quality marital relationships in farm couples. Additional determinants of marital adjustment in farm couples are dis cussed.
