Support Relationships in the Career Development of Home Economists in the Home Equipment and Related Product Industries

The role of mentors, sponsors, and career guides in the career development of home economists in the home equipment and related product industries was studied. Participants were 151 home economists employed by manufacturers of appliances, housewares/materials, and cleaning products who responded to a pretested mail questionnaire. The relationships between three variables and sup port relationships were tested using analysis of variance and the chi square test. Positive, statistically significant (p < 0.01) relationships were found between being mentored or sponsored and successlachievement level and between having a mentor or sponsor oneself and becoming a support figure for others (p < 0.01). Respondents reported a variety of ways in which their mentors and sponsors had aided their professional and personal development. Implications of the findings for home economists seeking career advancement in these indus tries are presented.
