Leisure Time of Husbands and WivesDepartment of Housing, Design, and Consumer Resources, Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, OK 74078
Department of Consumer Sciences, School of Home Economics, University of Alabama, University, AL 35486 Leisure time of husbands and wives in a sample of families in which both are employed is compared. Further, the relationships between leisure time of each spouse and selected socioeconomic measures and use of time in paid work and household work are examined. Husbands have significantly more leisure time than wives: husbands' mean minutes per day equal 255, while wives' mean min utes per day equal 220. Using multiple regression analysis, relatively high levels of explained variance in husband and wife leisure time are achieved with the set of 11 variables selected for this analysis. Time spent in paid work, time spent in household work, and leisure time of spouse are significantly related to the leisure time of both husband and wife. In addition, age of younger child in the family is significantly positively related to wife's leisure time. The importance of the findings for an understanding of family roles is discussed.
